According to legend, this flavored tea received its name from Charles Earl Grey, a man who served as Prime Minister during the 1830s under King William IV of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. It is said that this tea was given to Earl Grey as a gift from a Chinese Mandarin man in response to one of Charles Earl Grey's men saving the Chinese Mandarin's son from drowning.
This tea has gained popularity due to it's unique flavor, which comes from the oil of bergamot that is added during the drying process. Bergamot is a pear-shaped orange and is grown near the Mediterranean. Bergamot essential oils are extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange and has been used for years in cooking, fragrances, and teas. Earl Grey tea has been a favorite tea in England since the 1820's. It starts by blending black tea and bergamot to produce a tea that has an exotic complexity and aroma that is both distinctive and delightful.
